Authentic Aztec flavor combined with leading-edge distribution have helped Mission Foods become one of the world's leading tortilla producers. The Texas-based company's tortillas, chips, taco shells and other products are available throughout the country and around the world. Mission Foods makes products seven days a week, and has long been an innovator in route operations to deliver them freshly and efficiently.

Mission Foods began using batch computers on its routes in 1988, and Eduardo Valdes, VP of IT, had a longstanding vision of using advanced computers and wireless technology to preserve and extend the company's DSD distribution advantage. It wasn't until Intermec Technologies demonstrated its 761 Series handheld computer that could simultaneously support three forms of wireless communication that Valdes knew he could fulfill his route automation vision.

"I wrote the specifications for what I wanted in 1996, including wide-area wireless communication. The technology just wasn't there yet. It was large, unreliable and very expensive," said Valdes. "Intermec's 761 computer was just what I had been waiting for."
